Over the Air (O.T.A) Grounding your HD TV Antenna

An Antenna is usually mounted on the side of your house at a fairly high point or even on your roof. This makes it a very good target for a lightening strike which could easily send hundreds or even thousands of volts of electricity into your house. This can damage your expensive electronic equipment! Grounding is very important and is a good idea. Research shows that not only is grounding a safe procedure to follow but it also helps to eliminate noise on your shielded RG6 cable which will lead to a better signal improvement and allow you to attain a better quality signal so you can watch and enjoy HDTV without the hassle of any bills.

Grounding is a very easy procedure and you require the following 3 items to effectively ground your antenna
1.Good quality copper wire 10 Awg(Gauge) is the best for an antenna for a satellite you can use 6 gauge but for an antenna we recommend 10 Gauge copper wire Belden.
2.A simple Grounding block
3.Grounding rod 48 inch (4 feet grounding rod)

How to ground your new HD Antenna?

Connect the grounding wire to your mast or pole, usually we use one of the screws of the J pole if we are using a J pole mount, if we are using a mast we attach one end of the mast u bolt screw to the copper wire. the wire follows the path of the RG6 cable to the grounding block which is met just before entering the house. Another new copper wire is screwed to the grounding block together with another piece of copper wire which is then attached to the grounding rod which is pushed 4 feet into the ground.

Some people do not have earth to push the rod into for example some people have concrete or stone at the floor level and sometimes it is not possible to finish the last step of grounding using a grounding rod. In cases like this you can attach the other copper wire from the grounding rod instead to either an exterior water pipe as main water pipes go deep into the ground. Thanks to your cable company or phone company check if they may have also installed a grounding block to their installation which you can sometimes tap into.

When we perform commercial installations in condo's or nursing homes we sometimes hire an electrician to actually ground to the ground in the electrical breaker box. For residential properties grounding is usually as simple as using the copper grounding wire a grounding block and a 4 foot grounding rod.

Holland CISP-HR Heavy Duty cable Isolator  Standard dual grounding block
Holland CISP-HR cable isolator
The Holland Electronics CISP-HR cable isolator has been developed to prevent shock or fire damage to the subscriber's premises or cable system due to power line voltages entering the cable on non-grounded installations. The isolator will also reduce the energy pulse of spikes resulting from remote lightning or falling power lines on the cable. In the case of dangerous high energy spikes over 7,000 volts, the isolator will act as a fuse and open up to further reduce catastrophic damage.

Features:
•Prevents dangerous transient spikes from damaging digital set-top boxes, cable modems, satellite receivers and any other equipment on the coax line.
•Electronic clamping using ic technology (SIDACtor)
•Faster response time
•Does not degrade with repetitive Spikes
•Blocks 60 Hz Power up to 5,000 Volts
•Reduces The Energy Level of Spikes
•Eliminates Ground Loop Hum

Specifications:
•Frequency Range: 5-1000MHz
•Insertion Loss: < 1 dB
•Return Loss: > 20 dB
•RF Shielding: 85 dB
•Voltage Breakdown: 3kVa
•Current Supression: 500 amps (2x10 µs)
•Response Time: 1 ns
•Firing Voltage: 65 volts
